Dark Fandom Past, Part 2

In case someone didn't get to jump in when everyone was active yesterday!

I made fun of someone for being a troll. Turns out they weren't. I still feel so bad about that, because I was pretty scathing.

So they genuinely believed stupid shit and talked about it? I need some more information here.

AYRT: Oh, it wasn't that kind of troll. They posted what looked like spam, and I was snarky about it. Turns out that on my part, I just didn't understand what they were talking about, and on theirs, they needed to communicate better.

I'm pretty sure I accidentally plagiarized a friend's fic. Reading my old fanfics, a lot of things are almost identical to her fics.

What's strange is that she was my beta reader. I have no idea why she didn't say anything. Either she was flattered, or she was very nice.

Or she was clueless.

I deleted the entire board of an RPG I played with friends. It was during some serious mental health issues and directly before a suicide attempt plus there was other stuff going on with one of said "friends" but I still feel guilty about it.

Did you ever explain to them the reason why you did it?

Yeah, they knew. A couple of them forgave me. A couple didn't. They even managed to recover the board because it had a backup. The "friend" I mentioned before continued to talk about them behind their backs, tell me they hated me and had said loads of things that they hadn't, and further manipulate me because of my paranoia and bad home situation. Eventually I distanced myself from all of them. I was angry at them all for a while but in retrospect now I'm better I can see all of the problems with them stemmed from that one single person and the rest hadn't done anything wrong. I hope they also realised what an awful person she was.

The angry email Mary Sue one reminded me of how hyper-critical I was of Mary Sues. I never sent emails to authors or called out anyone specific, but I would rant about the topic on message boards.

There was this sporking fic

(Anonymous) 2018-03-01 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't support sporking at all, but I read it several times. It had the characters taking issue with what was a fairly bizarre story about them and I thought the reactions were funny, but later I heard that the author of the sporked fic took it down because of that and I felt bad about it.

When I was younger, I didn't realize how bad sporking was (for some people at least). I didn't spork anyone's fic, but I read a good amount of Twilight sporkfic (there was much for the taking). I stopped after sometime/not being in the fandom -- and mind you, I was an active participant on an archive for Twilight fanfic, sort of active on a Jacob Black board, lol. These days I think I could laugh at someone sporking a fic of mine, but I didn't really think much of it back then. I mean, I figured you actively had to look for sporks/go on to websites dedicated to hating x media.

ayrt

Well, this sporking fic was pretty infamous in those fandom circles (this pretty early on in internet fandom, 1999, 2000, something like that) and a lot of people went looking for the original fic because of it.
