My guess is the whole offshoot of low interest in non-white characters, maybe combined with the cultural thing about how interracial relationships - while still an issue for many racists - aren't as big of a taboo, so it doesn't hit the whole "forbidden, dirty, and SO hot" vibe that it used to.

On one hand, being gay isn't as taboo as it used to be either, but that hasn't stopped people writing the tabooness in for angst.

On the other hand, tabooness is an interesting point, and possibly explains the seeming rise of incest as kink?
