The extended universe / setting never really made coherent sense on any scale beyond Harry Potter's individual personal story, so I'm honestly OK just accepting that, pilfering the bits of HP and the HP universe that I like, and ignoring the rest of it.

Yup. The few Potter fics I read these days are crossovers. Because the best part of Potter for me is the characters. The universe building is not particularly good, even if I used to think it was.

I'm fine with the universe building - but only on a purely aesthetic level. The universe of Harry Potter does look and feel cool and has a lot of cool details to play with (which is all that it really needed to do in the series proper anyway). and I'm fine with a fic that just plays around with those details - that messes about with the look and feeling of the setting and all of the cool little bits, or HP AUs that are just dropping characters into the look and feel of the setting.

It's where a fic expects me to engage seriously with the underlying reality of the setting, and deal with wizard politics, or some character's career, or wizard dating, or whatever - I just don't care.

I guess this is why I personally dislike the extended universe. It has a completely different feel and I feel it detracts from the overall story.

I agree with you. The aesthetics of the universe do work. And I do like some AUs that change at least enough that it works. But so much of the universe just doesn't work for me any more. I want great characters, but I also want great worldbuilding where the world makes sense. HP has too many issues and feels too small to me (I love AUs that explore other magical cultures).
