I'm not agreeing (also not judging) BUT I do think that it would be a massively good idea to have more pooling of incomes and communal living and stuff between people regardless of family and romantic ties. The basic assumption that people are fundamentally free agents except insofar as they're in monogamous romantic relationships or have family connections is so harmful and it really needs to be torn down.

No thanks, I'd like to keep my money to my husband and me. It's hard enough as it is, getting two people to agree about money.

IA - that's the situation I'm in and it's wonderful. we're lifelong friends whose domestic skill sets compliment each other (I cook and take care of the lawn, she cleans and organizes) but we are neither romantically nor sexually interested in each other. fortunately, at least where we are, there is no barrier to getting a joint checking account and placing a domestic partner on insurance, we don't need to prove we're "that kind" of partner.

more people really should do this. sure, friends can be as come-and-go as romantic interests for some people but god, it's so nice knowing I have a stable life without having to live up to anyone's expectations.
