Medical Question

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-03-05 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure if anyone is still on here. But I need advice. So, had a cold/flu/whatever for 4 days. And up until now, no fever. Temperature normal. It was normal last night, when I checked it last. But I just checked it, and it is up to 101.6. Should I be worried? Never had a bug where it had no fever and then suddenly jumped several days into it. Do I need a doctor, or is this nothing to worry about?

I happened to be googling around for similar reasons (turns out I had food poisoning, not the flu) and I could have sworn I saw something where it's only time for the doctor if the temp remains above 101.5 for a certain duration of time. Not hours, though, days.

I had a fever for exactly two hours and then it was gone, so bodies be weird, yo.

Yes, bodies are weird. And my body is probably telling me it isn't happy about me being up and driving and doing a job interview. Didn't have a choice, though.

Are you taking any kind of NSAID (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin etc) or cold medicine with any NSAIDs in it? Because one of the things they do, aside from treat pain and inflammation, is lower fevers. So if you’re taking it and your temp is still climbing, calling an advice nurse or your doc’s office might be helpful. I dunno if your temp might climb if you recently stopped taking NSAIDs, though. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

I've been taking tylenol and asprin pretty regularly for the past 4 days. Maybe I missed a dose? Honestly, having trouble keep track other than making sure I'm not taking it within 4 hours of the previous dosing.

Temperature fluctuations are normal even if you're not sick. If you still have a fever in a couple of days or if you develop new symptoms, then go see a doctor. Otherwise, it's probably just an immune response to whatever bug you've got.

Caveat: If you already have a depressed immune system or have any other underlying condition that's got you worried (like latent TB or something), go get checked out.

Hmmmm. The only thing that slightly worries me is that I've got asthma, and this is the first bug I've had in years that has been in my lungs. Usually I only get head bugs.

I'm not a doctor, but it's my understanding that in general, fevers are only a concern if they're abnormally high (like say, above 104) or if they last a long time. I don't know about you, but it's not uncommon for my colds/flus to ramp up over a few days, depending on how well I manage it in the early days. If you've been forced to work and haven't had as much rest, then yeah, I could definitely see running a fever for a few days.

Now if you start hallucinating, then that might be a sign you need to seek medical treatment.

Does ear ringing that sounds like music count?

You're right. I'm just being paranoid. I just want this stupid bug to go away.
