There's a lot of shades between "jerk" and "eccentric", and I think that Quincy Jones - certainly in the interview in question - falls much closer to eccentric. And so, in those cases, yeah, I think it's OK to just accept it as an eccentric old dude talking some shit.

I mean, the reason that OP keeps harping on the fact that Quincy Jones didn't want to talk about Bill Cosby (not that he denied Cosby's crimes - he just refused to talk about them specifically) is because there's not really anything in the interview that's actually awful (IIRC - I haven't read it in detail since it came out). Impolite and outrageous and eccentric and perhaps rude, but I really wouldn't call most of it awful.

to my mind "eccentric" means "batshit insane and has too much money to go to a mental hospital", i.e. Howard Hughes or Michael Jackson.

I don't agree.

I've got to say, given that apology, that his daughters felt the need to talk to him, and that it seems like multiple friends called him out, it's maybe worse than eccentric.

It was certainly impolitic, which I think is why he talked to his daughters and apologized, but impolitic - again - is not the same as awful.
