I've never watched this show but I just assumed his real names was Stiles

To be fair, there's actually very, very little basis from the movie. They basically kept the names Scott and Stiles and the fact that Scott was bitten to become a werewolf. They didn't even keep Scott's last name from the movie.

There were some little nods to the movie in the first season, but yeah, the show has little to do with it. But they kept Stiles' name, and it was teased for years that it was Polish and difficult to pronounce and hilarious. And it turned out to be just difficult to spell.
