I didn't think it sounded that awful?

I can't quite make up my mind on his American accent, either. It sounds off to me, but... maybe not SO off that I'd think "He's not American!!" if I didn't already know the actor was a Brit? I think part of the problem is that a lot of British actors trying to do an American accent tend to over-exaggerate their vowels, especially the o's and a's, especially when followed by an r which is then more heavily emphasized than usual. Hugh Laurie did this when playing House, but he sounded more natural to me than Cumberbatch does.

I couldn't stand it either but that might be because his entire everything in that movie really reminded me of someone I absolutely hate irl.

It's been 15 years since I saw him in anything and I thought it sounded terrible.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-07 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Sooo, would you say it is... strange?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-08 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
*applause*

His accent wasn't great but it was serviceable imo

It's not the worst American accent to come out of the UK, but it's not great. I'm not sure what his dialect coach was thinking -- it would probably have been a lot easier to have him do a more Manhattan accent instead of having him focus so hard on flattening out his vowels and emphasizing his r's. He almost sounds like he's trying to do a Midwestern accent, but he's just a little too slow and deliberate about it sometimes.

Still, it's not like American actors don't mess up American accents all the time, let alone other countries'.

*shrugs* I didn't think it was terrible, but honestly I was too busy feeling his voice in my bones to be worried about whether he was pronouncing his vowels correctly.

That sounds painful and creepy. I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

I actually DID find it distractingly bad, and I have no opinion one way or the other about him. He sounded like a British guy doing an American accent.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-08 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
....... I, uh. I really, really, REALLY liked it, lol. In fact, this was one of the only times I found him attractive.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-08 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't perfect, but I didn't find it distractingly bad. As an American, a fake American accent has to be pretty bad before I really start to care. If I don't know the actor is faking it, I just dismiss it as a regional thing I'm not familiar with.

I'm not an English native speaker and couldn't tell the difference, but my country dubs all movies anyway, and I'm mostly watching in my own language, because my SO doesn't understand English very well.

It wasn't great but tbh it was a huge improvement over his Southern accent in August: Osage County. And I loved him in that movie. Conversely, I didn't love him as Strange, but the accent was passable.
