I'm beginning to doubt it. A few sold them in a deal to try and bring about their Potterdammerung when the last book hit the shelves, or the rug, but felt cheated when there was barely a whisper. Sad day in Mudville.

I don't know why people expected the last book to cause the same kind of shitstorm that the sixth one did. It was in the sixth one that JKR made her position on both Hermione's love life (that she both wanted Ron and deserved him as well) and the moral status of Slytherin (the brave ones are evil; the good ones are cowards) absolutely clear. At that point, everyone who had an investment in either outcome was either vindicated (and they were disgustingly sore winners--I can understand being a sore loser, but being an asshole because you got what you wanted makes no sense to me) or too disgusted to care any more.

Maybe they thought something big was going to change and people had been set up for red herrings in the last book. I did love all the predictions they made regarding the "inevitable" wank yet when the book finally came, the wank was centered firmly on the "Is this the real book? I hope not" category and even a good deal of FW didn't care for the book or found it confusing.

The whole thing then repeated itself, admittedly kept within fandom_lounge, as to the "inevitable" wank that Rowling's prequel would bring about and, once more, no wank was to be found. Personally, I think a lot of people learned after OotP and HBP to flock their journals, which is amazingly counterproductive to fandom wank. The pathetic part about all of this is that most of what was reported to fandom wank after the fallout of HBP was mere discussions and opinions that didn't follow with the majority opinion. I find such things detrimental not only to fandoms, as it results in people locking up their material and thus keeping discussion to a bare minimum, but also lowering the quality or standards of fandom wank. Not that there were many to begin with but sometimes it's best to just preserve what's there.

This is one of the main issues I have with fandom wank. Everyone flocks their journals, which means that it's very hard to find good discussion any more, because anyone who has an actual strong opinion has to lock people they don't trust and disagree with out of the discussion due to trolling. It's lowered the standards of [livejournal.com profile] metafandom much worse than F_W because most of the really good discussions are private.

F_W is a giant 800 pound gorilla sitting in the middle of the room throwing shit at people. Everybody knows it's there. Nobody can really do anything about it; the site they're hosted on was created in part to give them a permanent home. The only thing you can do is leave the room and go somewhere private to talk.

I very much agree. I was a follower of fandom wank back when they were being bounced from place to place though I kept to lurking. I still lurk there but the amount of wank material, I feel, has degraded a bit. I'd like to think that it's because the community has gotten a great deal bigger and there will be some bad apples that ruin it for others. But there's a good amount of wank, particularly in the HP criteria of things, that aren't wank-related material. They're just different opinions. I also see such things on the wank report pertaining to an essay that a reviewer wrote on Deathly Hallows. It was hardly a glowing review and there were no replies to it, yet it was in the wank report anyway. There was also an excellent discussion started on sepiamagpie's journal about Dumbledore being gay that had been reported. Thankfully, no one turned any of this into full out wank reports.

There's a good deal of grudgery throughout, most of which does get pointed out but some tends to slip by.

I definitely agree with you about discussions being in short supply. About the only places to go for really good discussion tends to be through flocked journals or locked communities. Even yahoo message groups are fodder these days, despite needing to join a group to see the related material.

Solely on behalf of myself and as a member of fandom wank, I offer my apologies for the extreme idiocy of the secret and the harassment you get from other members. They truly do not represent the whole, as I'm glad to see you know, and I can tell you with assurance that the entire community does not hate you. Nor does the entire community need to make you "get" anything.

As someone who isn't a part of the morality brigade, I'd like to say that you're a whiny cunt, ataniell93, and the only positive thing about your existence is the amusement your flailing brings to others.

Ta! :)
