In the case of Kurotsuki: People like shipping characters who antagonize each other. I don't like this ship for a few reasons but I get why they get shipped.

As for Tsukishima being a bad friend... eh. I guess I have a different understanding of the character.

I get why it’s shipped but I don’t get why it’s so popular. It’s the most popular HQ ship at an upcoming all-series event (though it has a kurotsuki mini event going on which explains it I guess; second-most popular with no event is IwaOi).

KuroKen and TsukiYama have so much more material in-canon. I don’t get HQ fandom sometimes.

I'm a big fan of KuroKen and TsukiYama (Yamaguchi is my absolute fave) so I don't get it much either, but I guess some people like rivalries or something.

Yeah, the main reason I don't like it is because it basically breaks up both my OTPs (Kuroken and Tsukiyama which have definitely more non-canon material).
The bigger popularity is surprising though because it's not like shippers always prefer the rival/antagonistic ship over the childhood friend ship - in the Free!! fandom, it's exactly the other way around, popularity wise.
Maybe it's a matter of certain BNF or popular doujinshika latching onto the ship and making it more popular that way.
