This always makes me sad to hear. Not that there's a "wrong" way to play Skyrim, I've had many characters that didn't do the main questline at all. But if you don't finish the main quest you miss out on Sovngarde, which is my favorite location in the whole game (and quite possibly my favorite for the whole goddamn series, though it's a close contest btwn Sovngarde and Aldruhn).
