Do you feel like purity culture is an issue in fandom?

I think that most things that get called "purity culture" are actually better understood as examples of people being assholes in ways that aren't really all that rare in fandom or on the Internet. So I don't think that you really need to talk about purity culture to explain those things. It's a more peripheral issue.

When combined with 'callout' culture, yes.

I'm not exactly sure what purity culture is.

Everyone's definition seems different.

Not the places where I hang out, but with the stories I'm hearing from those back from the war, it's definitely making things extremely shitty in certain spaces. I'm not sure I'd say it is an "issue for fandom" all the time it seems to be mainly limited to some (admittedly big) fandoms, while they're absent from others.

Been in fandoms where people get harassed en masse for their ships.

I think there's probably a lot of fanwork that doesn't get posted because of it, yes.

But I think it's on the way out. For almost a decade, it's been "cool" to be morally righteous. I suspect we'll eventually see a shift to it being "cool" to be shocking and transgressive. Every generation rebels against the one before.

I still don’t really get what purity culture is or how it differs or is worse than other issues fandoms have fought over in the past.

It's the moral element that makes it worse, IMO. Sure, the flamewars of yore could be nasty business, but there's a fundamental difference between engaging someone because you hate their ship, and in demanding that someone be doxxed and chased off the internet because you sincerely believe that they're RL pedophiles or supporting RL pedophiles.

Just like roy moore. That old man make devastating choices... or culturally you could be that loose?!

Should not had PURITY be associated with REALITY. Should not make any connection, engaging nor conclusion with those issues.

Considering that I feel like I have to post my incest-ship fics behind a sockpuppet, yes.

I think it really depends on the fandom and the age groups involved. Something like Voltron where the fanbase is huge and also skews very young, then yes. Fandoms where the fanbase is a bit older don't tend to have as much of it.
