I feel that this is something tumblr is very good at - giving the impression of social interaction when practically none is actually taking place. It's like you're writing something on a post-it note, sticking it to a wall, and walking away, and then while you're not looking, someone copies what you wrote onto a new note and sticks it to a different wall somewhere else. You can have a similar experience on LJ or Facebook or a Bboard, but I feel that with those platforms, it is more obvious when no one is responding to you (maybe not so much Facebook, but I hardly ever use Facebook and only friend people I already know offline, anyway). A tumblr post can have all these likes and reblogs, but none of those people are necessarily engaging with you by saying anything in response or, if they do, they may be making a general statement rather than replying to you individually.

I never formed any significant friendships through LJ, either, but even if no one came to my LJ, I could and did join comms and I had actual conversations with people on those.
