I’m normally all about Beauty and the Beast/redemption via love stories, but there has to be something in it for the Beauty. I can’t see Reylo as a “(romantic) love redeems” story, because Kylo has no good qualities. He cares for no one, creates nothing, and has no sense of humor.

Remind me what Beast's good qualities were again?

A big library?

AYRT—which version of which Beast? My favorites all created something, or loved/cared for someone/something (even if only their rose garden), or could laugh at something, or at the very minimum strove to not be beastly, although if that’s the only bar they clear they tend not to be among my favorites.

Even Disney Beast asked his servants for advice and then offered the library, and it was not a trick and he was glad to make Belle happy. Kylo lacks even that much in the way of people skills. I’ve seen so many comparisons of Kylo to Mr. Darcy, who I don’t much like, and to Reylo as a Beauty and the Beast type story, which I usually enjoy. And either comparison is, to me, a real stretch.

Kylo is not, as of the second film in a trilogy, striving to better himself. He has not been shown to be ashamed of his Beastliness. He is not concerned with honor and pride like Darcy. And I can’t imagine one more three hour movie giving him a satisfying redemption arc that involves a romance with Rey or anyone else. His only humanizing moment so far has been brief reluctance to kill his mother. Any redemption would have to build on that for me to not cringe my way through it.

Depends on the version and how hard you're squinting at the text.

You see him as caring for no one probably because you want to see it that way. That's very open to debate.

AYRT—maybe Leia, insofar as he hesitated to kill her. If he cared for Rey, it was tenuous enough to be subsumed by his desire to make use of her power, in much the same way that the only way Vader could ask his son to join him in The Empire Strikes Back was as co-ruler of the galaxy and not as his son. By Return of the Jedi, Vader managed to sacrifice himself for Luke, but living in repentance would’ve been harder for the character and audience to swallow.

If Reylo was a version of Beauty and the Beast, it would be one where the Beast ate villages full of people and wished his Beauty to join him.

Definitely Leia, definitely his father despite killing him--Snoke senses he felt conflicted about it.
I think he does care about Rey but his way of juggling motivations and denials just isn't predictably comparable to Vader so I have no idea where it's going to lead, or if it will make sense to me.

He sucks at everything else -- why wouldn't Kylo suck at caring about people?

Because I was totally arguing that Kylo Ren is a selfless sweetheart who puts together one sweet gift basket.

Anon OP of this thread here—see, you’re the type of anti fan who makes me wince, because we agree about a character, but it’s like you want to pick fights with his fans. I just hate the character and Reylo. I don’t hate his fans en masse for liking him or the ship.
