The worst isn't when you missed the height of the action. The worst is when you get into a fandom (or back into a fandom) years later when a lot of the fan material has started disappearing offline. Like a lot of older fandom fics that used to be hosted on archives or LJ pages that are now deleted, so when you look at recs lists half the major fics are 404 links. Or the fanart used to be circulated on imageboards like anonib and those boards/threads don't exist nowadays and tracking down people with archives of the images is fucking impossible.

(I lost it years ago but I used to have an HD with thousands of pieces of FF7 fanart on it that I'd occasionally upload so other fans could have copies. I'm pretty sure a lot of those pieces that I had simply don't exist on the web anymore anywhere. It still breaks my heart that I lost it since it was like this awesome chunk of fandom history.)
