Re: What kinds of fic rub you the wrong way?

Stories that ignore canon couplings and pretend their ship is already established

Eh, I give a pass to this, because sometimes I don't feel like sitting through a breakup and the associated awkwardness before I get to any good meat with the pairing I'm actually here for. Plus, it'd get incredibly repetitive if that was just something that *had* to be dealt with each and every time with a fic.

I'm of the opinion that if you believe in your ship, you should work with canon... or mark your fic as something else. I'm not here in support of a show that was all about John getting with Marsha, and having them go through so much together for like five seasons, only to come across a fic that says in less than three sentences "John's with Karen now, he never loved Marsha and was 100% in love with Karen the whole time." It's just lazy writing.

I guess we'll just agree to disagree, then. I defo see what you're saying, but if I want to read about John and Karen, despite the canon pairing, I don't necessarily want to sit and read through a bunch of John and Marsha angsting first. That's not to say it shouldn't be done, and I might even like a good drawn-out breakup->new relationship arc from time to time, but I don't think every fic that goes John/Karen should have to do it first.

Yeah, that kills almost all slash and crack, which is about exploring subtext and possibilities that are NOT explicitly referenced in canon.

I'm not talking about crackfic. I've written crackfic, and don't pretend it's based in canon in any way. I'm talking about stories that pick up the next day and pretend canon never happened. It's annoying to find out about it when you're already in the story.
