Re: What kinds of fic rub you the wrong way?

Do you mind if I ask what, in particular, appeals to you about Reader!fic? I'm honestly just curious

ayrt

Sure!

For me (I have no idea about other people) it's a few things.
1) I like the idea of being personally involved in am adventure. I like that sort of inclusion. When I read books, I'm in the adventure as well, but it's like a movie that I'm deeply consumed by. With Reader!fic, if I'm lucky, sometimes the stock "you" reacts the way I would. It just feels more...immersive.
2) A little over 10 years ago, when I had my first foray into fandom, the very first fics and archive/community I was active with was a Reader/MC one. At the time, 2nd pov was new to me, but I enjoyed it immensely, and I guess I got a taste for it there (original characters as stand-ins was were not new to me. at least here we're directly stating nah, it's me adventuring and romancing with the MC).
3) If there's characters I'm attracted to, I'm not going to lie, I would like to gallivant around and adventure and romance with them. I'm not going on stealth missions or overthrowing kingdoms on the daily, nor am I romantically involved with anyone irl; Reader!fic allows for some indulgent fantasizing. Now, does it serve as a distraction? Yes. As does all fic for me. But it also makes me want to go live, you know? So occasionally, I'll put it down, go...live. Hopefully to find my own irl adventure/relationship.

I'd like to clarify that I don't do Reader!fic for all my fandoms. Just certain characters I really like.

Thanks for asking! It's useful to think about the reasons behind why we do things. I haven't really thought about it too much.

tIl;dr I suppose I just want to be loved, specifically by a particular handsome/intelligent/etc. and that is a role particular MCs can fill for a moment. I also want adventure and to be better than I am (be it braver, wittier, etc.)

Thanks for the explanation! That's a very thoughtful response and really interesting.
