I'm not saying that individual opinions are necessarily untrustworthy. There's a lot of value in having conversations about things with people.

But when it comes down to fandoms, and social media consensus, and things like that, it's a lot easier for people to latch onto things that aren't necessarily central to the movie as a reason for loving or hating it. We've seen that with a bunch of movies recently, and especially sequels and remakes. Like, think of something like the Ghostbusters movie. And that kind of social media consensus is usually what you're getting when you have a vague sense of what the fandom thinks based on things heard on social media.

So, just "original fans generally seemed to hate it" doesn't necessarily mean that much in the sense that fandom consensus is very weird and unreliable these days. I don't trust it.
