I thought they WERE just friends, because the canon pairing is Balthier/Ashe. Is that not the case? Been a long time since I played it, but I also remember loving their dynamic.

Actually, aside from the tragic fate of Ashe's marriage, there wasn't any love story in Final Fantasy XII.

Balthier flirted with everything that moved, and his friendship with Fran was nothing more than a friendship at the time the game took place.

I thought the ending implied a Balthier/Ashe wedding though. I remember that nothing happened during the game itself, but I thought the end went that way?

well, ff12 is basically star wars

so balthier/ashe is basically han/leia, which works

(and yes, fran is chewbacca)

Oh, I ship the hell out of them. Fran/Balthier is my second-favorite Final Fantasy OTP, after Fang/Vanille. I'm also kinda partial to Ashe/Al-Cid, but that's neither here nor there...
