Things you still like

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though it's considered problematic, passe, or childish to like these days.

- FRIENDS. First, the "dated" stuff confuses me when it comes to technology; how do people read historic literature, in that case? Jane Austen novels have horse and buggies. That's way more dated than Jennifer Aniston's big cellphone.

(Yes, I know people also mean dated in terms of some of the humor, which I'll agree is cringey now. I specifically mean the technology argument.)

- Buffy. Joss Whedon's a creep, and it's not as progressive as you'd expect a show to be in 2018, but... whatever, I still love it.

I'm with you, but on the other hand, the 90s doesn't seem old enough to be "historical" in a lot of peoples' eyes and therefore doesn't get the same pass as something set in Austen's time.

AYRT - True, but I still don't mind.

Maybe part of it is that I have the opposite peeve, when shows set things in the future, because as soon as the year comes, you'll know that never actually happened. And it also sets you up for astronomical irony, like Parks and Rec, where in 2017 she would've been freaking out about Trump cutting the Parks completely. That's more distracting to me.

Married With Children. It's got a lot of stuff that's problematic, but I love it and watching it in the morning helps me get ready for the day.

I find bits of Friends a bit cringeworthy joke-wise sometimes but I still like it overall and enjoy watching it.

Disney in general? Maybe not in fandom but irl the fact that I'm an adult that genuinely enjoys watching the movies can get me looks of sheer bemusement or sarcastic comments questioning my mental faculties from people who think that enjoying cartoons is something you should grow out of.

Buffy and Angel, but I also don't really follow anyone that bashes them. They're a bit dated in some regards sure but I still think they're fun.

I don't know if liking Sabrina the Teenage Witch is considered childish but I still love it a lot.

I loved Salem on Sabrina, her aunts were the shit, and I wanted a bag that would shrink all the shit I could stuff into it.

Hades/Persephone. I discovered Greek mythology when I was a very naive and sheltered nine/ten year old and I never pick up the problematic elements to the ship. As an adult, I certainly see those elements now, but I just don't give a fuck. You just can't beat baby's first OTP!

Problematic is kind of the point of that ship though, no? Plus, gods aren't literal people, unless you want them to be, I suppose. They represent elements/concepts, and the myths are personifications of that.

Like I said, my dumb nine year old self didn't really pick up the problematic parts and just head canon a Disneyfied version. So, the point of the ship to me has always been a star crossed lovers thing and not a non-con kidnapping thing. Childhood head canons are hard to break out of, I guess.

Depends on the myth, since the main one you hear is also very... Demeter-centric. There are other myths, usually stemming from Persephone's own cult, that state that, while she was kidnapped, it was because Hades basically went to Zeus for romantic advice and spent his time with her apologizing profusely. Persephone then ate the seeds when she realized her mother was coming because tbh Demeter was overbearing (who holds a bunch of innocents fucking hostage and starves them over this) and she wanted some modicum of freedom. So she made her choice because Hades treated her better than her mother and she really didn't want to spend her life trapped in a static garden.

Like. Why do you think Orpheus was able to strike a chord with the two of them? It sure as hell wasn't because it was a loveless marriage.

Phantom of the Opera and Erik/Christine. Never getting over my loathing for the 2004 movie, though.

Almost everything I've ever been into.

Harry Potter and my fave being Snape.

World of Warcraft is self explanatory.

Various MCU films (i LOVED Valkyrie).

The Star Trek and Star Wars franchises are NOT perfect by any means.
