I'm not a Star Wars fan; I've seen the original 1977 movie, The Empire Strikes Back, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi. Thats it. Recently I watched The Phantom Menace, and I cannot believe the people who say The Last Jedi is "the worst Star Wars movie EVAR". Are you kidding me. That Jar Jar Binks bullshit nonsense exists in this world and somehow TLJ is worse?! I know there's criticism over the ~problematic elements~ of TLJ and I won't argue that it's cheesy as fuck, but holy shit. TPM made me want to punch a goddamned baby. Jar Jar Binks. Jesus dickshitting Christ, people.

Yeahhhhh.

I mean, I agree with you totally, TPM is just the worst Star Wars movie and it's not even close.

At the same time, it just sort of feels inevitable that people are going to take that position, because it's basically a really strong piece of rhetorical high ground in a Internet arguments. Or maybe a Lagrange point is a better analogy - it's a relatively stable position to hold, and so a lot of people end up drifting towards it by a kind of gravity.

Haven't seen TLJ yet, but I wholeheartedly agree that Phantom Menace is an abomination. True story: TPM was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw, and I hated it so much that I refused to watch any of the others for nearly 15 years. After I finally watched the original trilogy, I regretted having waited so long to do so, but I hated TPM even more afterwards.

Okay, strictly from a cinematic standpoint, Attack of the Clones is technically the worst Star Wars movie ever. TPM is pretty awful, though. Jar Jar Binks is probably the most hated thing that George Lucas has ever created, and that man gave us wookies watching adult entertainment and Howard the Duck. The Sith Lord Jar Jar theories were fun, though.

AotC is worse than TPM.

But yes, TLJ sucks balls and is a long ass meandering mess. Sorry. It was bad. It mangled Luke's character and it destroyed what JJ was setting up in TFA.

Here's hoping JJ does exactly what Rian did him and YEET that one fucking plot point over the cliff where it should have stayed in the first place.
