It's a 19th century literary fandom - the use of language is a huge part of it. In everyday fannish conversation it doesn't matter so much of course, but OP is surely speaking of fanworks.

I am talking about fanworks, specifically fanfiction. Though I suppose it could be annoying if meta isn't written in a legible, coherent fashion. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
