New England clam chowder is too creamy and rich. I like something with a lighter broth

That's what chowder is, though. By definition it is made with milk or cream and thickened. If you have a thinner broth, it would be clam soup (or stew).

That's fine. I just am petty about clam chowder being clam chowder (and the New York kind doesn't count either).

Manhattan clam chowder might be more to your liking, it has a lighter tomato base.
