Some people here are going to whine about your elitism, but I can certainly see where you're coming from; I've drifted away from most of the fandoms I wanted to participate in because of the type of stuff you're talking about.

I find the situation becomes 1,000x more difficult if you're a woman who really wants to talk about something OTHER than sex/gender (in terms of how most male and some female fans will react). It's not impossible to find welcoming communities--the internet is simply too big and too diverse--but it is harder than it ought to be.

Other things like what, out of curiousity?

my guess would be things like the plot of whatever series. for crime dramas, the cases. for hospital shows, the way the patients reacted. things like that, maybe? that's what I like to talk about, personally. character dynamic too, but not to the point of that "teehee they so have the hots for each other!" shit.

Anon def. hit some of the type of stuff I'm talking about and the secret itself hit on the biggest stuff (fandom source material drawing on/playing with common mythologies). Some of the other things I've wanted to discuss include the structure of governmental institutions, value systems, what sort of thematic lessons people might pull out of the source material, etc.

I tried to get into two nameless fandoms (I'm not naming them because I've given up on them and am not interested in arguing about their specific dynamics) that have at least 50% male participation in the fandom. Both fandoms have rich source material, and there should be a lot of great discussions. However, there have been a couple of terrible flare-ups in re: gender/sex in each fandom. As a result, a disturbingly large percentage of the male fans assume that a female fan will want to inject gender/sex into everything, and can be very closed minded when it comes to making a known female fan feel welcome.

There's a third fandom that I really, really tried to get into recently. I'd say it's about 90% women, and unless you're talking/writing about 'ships (and making typo-filled graphics to match), no one pays you any attention. It was a tremendously sad experience, to be honest.

Wow. Elitist, sexist, AND condescending. Bravo.

...reading comprehension FAIL.

I'm not seeing any sexism in that person's post.

All they were saying was that male fans automatically figure female fans will try and do the romance thing. And honestly, as a girl with two brothers and a boyfriend involved in various fandoms? It's true, judging by what I've heard from them. The guys often look at things objectively, but the women--and let's face it, this is true for the majority--see things quite subjectively. They sit there and decide who would be good with who, and squee about their OTPs. Guys really don't give a shit about shipping and just watch, for example, TV shows for the action, the cases, whatever.

As for elitism and being condescending, I'm not seeing that, either. That was a very calm-toned post that presented things as logically as possible. Seems as though you're taking personal offense to it.

Well, there's definitely sexism in THIS post.

Oh really.

Sooo... observation and presentation of the differing fan habits of males and females is suddenly sexist?

You must be one of the whackjobs that thinks both genders should be PERFECTLY EQUAL LOL. There are no differences in males and females whatsoever, amirite! Everyone is the ~same~!
