Yes, but it hasn't always been all about the squee. (And I disagree with the OP that it is now, although you have to know where to go/look for the SRS BIZNIS parts.) And, y'know, back when females were rare in most speculative-fiction fandoms, they didn't call it "squee," although I maintain fiercely that that's what it was. :-)
