113- =/=? They're not much alike...except being physically interactive games.

121- I actually bulk at reading this because of everything I've heard about Carolina and Xavin's relationship.

133-...I can understand why.

150- Part of the reason I hate the manga is because I LOVED the idea of a shoujo where it DIDN'T have to be about who banged whom...and then it was.

156- I think the dark knight was a better movie (in everything but visuals, cause hot damn, that had some fucking amazing visuals) but I would rather see Hellboy again.

IMO, the relationship handled sensitively (barring Joss' current run) in the comic itself. It's a lot more complicated than "The Lesbian Couple", and sort of disappears for a while, when the characters go off world for an entire arc, though.

Re: 121

I just hate that, generally (And I know it's gotten better, but...) That she's like "Ew." When he's male, and completely fine when he's not. I can ttly understand being like "I'm not sexual attracted to you unless you're female." but like...I know there have been times when she's been repusled by him just touching her as male (Like at Kingpin's restaurant. "I don't want you pawing me when you look like that.")

...and i was ttly just informed that IS in Joss Whedon's part but...(Actually my biggest issues with American comics is inconsistancies like that)

Re: 121

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's totally understandable. The relationship is complicated and weird, and probably doomed to failure, what with Karolina being The Lesbian and Xavin swapping from sex to sex.

Xavin and Karolina aren't the focal points of the comic, though, and Xavin doesn't even show up until after Victor, so you could at least read the first couple of arcs without worrying about that. Really, it's an ensemble book, and there are a lot of cool characters treated with interest and sensitivity at different parts of the storyline.

Yeah, it's something you sort get used in comics fandom. I'm always disowning one arc or another because I hate the writer. Millar, I'm looking at you.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not JUST that (I replied to the other commenter with a more solid list) and I haven't like...sworn it off FOREVER or anything (It's kinda on my "I'll get around to it after these other things I want to get around to" type thing) but that aspect does really get under my skin

And despite what the other person said, it has little to do with shipping, and just a personal clash of beliefs. I know there are people like Carolina and it's not an unreal portrayal...I just want to limit my contact with them as much as possible in that respect. If it was about shipping gay people I would have already read young avengers.

Oh, I get that! I'm a bit of an evangelist for the series, but just like anything, there reasons to want to read and reasons not to. :D

Maybe just wait until the movie comes out?

Re: 121

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I am very much looking forward to the movie (Except my friend is an utter kill joy and has decided it will suck because "Marvel always fucks up their movies" We'll ignore that he's loved like...75% of them.)

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand your dislike for the consistency... but to ignore it because of that pairing is a little silly... to me the series was excellent during the first book and the second arc with Chase. The story is excellent and is worth a shot, even if the lesbianism isn't handled desirably. (Seriously why can't fandom be good without constant shippers running around)

Re: 121

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It has nothing to do with the shipping, dear, that was just one thing that's effected why I haven't made a huge effort to get it. (And since the secret was about THAT, it seemed random to be like "And here are the other reasons, OP, which you didn't ask for and don't need to know)

If you really must know they include: Lack of access, not being too fond of the art style, knowing Gert dies and not wanting to get attached to her, knowing one of the authors, lack of consistency in story, not liking unending plots generally and disagreeing with them not keeping it a mini series, having it been fanned to death around me, not wanting to get involved in the skrull plot, and just not having gotten around to it.

Re: 121

[identity profile] nuclearpez.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha alright~

Unfortunately the series does work on a lot of spoilers so knowing those kind of twists prior does turn one off. I'm an American Comic fan in general so to me its just kinda something I'm used to, but I completely understand about the inconsistency (but that's the problem with er... all kind of comics except for indie comics) And I do agree that while something new there are better stuff out there than Runaways =).

Re: 121

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no I have a friend whom I love dearly, but doesn't get that telling me things about her fandoms is LESS likely to pull me in, not MORE likely.

I'm spoiled on Japanese comics. Even if it sucks, at least you know the plot device was INTENDED suck not "Creator A sets up something awesome, and gets pulled from the series so douche B comes in and fucks up all foreshadowing, plot development etc"

Eventually I'll get to it, it's just not high on my list right now (like ho shit Watchman, because I'm like...a terrible comics book fan and haven't read that yet)

Still doesn't make me like Sailor Moon Stars any better. :|

But...but how can you not love a plot arc where everyone was dressed like bondage hookers?!

Re: 121

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, I hated the Starlights. Seriously, hated them.

Re: 121

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed And mocked them in the TV show, but in the manga that whole part was like "plotplotplotwtfisgoingonplotploteveryonedeadnotdead THEY'RE MARRIED AND HAVING BABIES!"

Which left 14 year old me like "...YAY!?"

[identity profile] neontehsheep.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
121. Actually, Karolina and Xavin have a rather beautiful relationship. Outside of Joss's shitty arc, Karolina does NOT act repulsed by Xavin in her male form - she doesn't get all lovey-dovey at her, but other than that she treats her pretty much the same way as she does when she's female. And even with all the stuff you listed above, it's really worth giving it a read - if you hate the fact they didn't just leave it as a mini, you can always drop it after the first hardcover. It's got an amazing ending anyway. And uhh yeah :')

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm one of those who can never just not read it XD

I usually regret it *cough*HP's Epilogue*cough* but I just have to know, you know?

Like I said, I'm sure someday I'll get around to it.
