I don't remember (a bit into the lab arc?) -- it's been a bit of time since I read last, but I remember (and my memory might be faulty) that she drove Scar off from Roy when his flames wouldn't ignite due to rain and kind of got slighted that role in favor of ARMSTRONG SPARKLES. Though those do make me giggle, and I do enjoy them, so it's not all bad! But it was still disappointing. If she gets more development later on? I'll be a happy fangirl!

Okay, wow. Yeah, you're not very far into the manga at all. But yeah, she gets a whole lot more development once the manga and anime split. I guess there's the trap arc (starting in late 30's), and there's a whole "arc" of sorts that goes into her and Roy's backstory, as well as that of their experiences in Ishbal. That arc starts in the mid 50's. And throughout it all, she's still incredibly important to the story.

Anyways. I know it's a long manga, but try giving it a shot again, especially if you like Hawkeye. She's pretty bad-ass and can stand well enough alone without Mustang in the shot. =P

Well, knowing that, I guess I'll give it another go ^^' I guess if it's longer than the anime, it would explain how a lot of characters don't seem to be getting quite the spotlight they were before, so maybe I'll like it more? ^^' I thought it basically followed the same general plotline (though I had heard there were some fairly major differences towards the end, but have been trying not to be spoiled) but if not, then consider me relieved!

Heh, the anime and manga diverge relatively early. By chapter 30 (and before, really), things begin to become radically unfamiliar. (For reference, we're up to chapter 85 right now.) It's like having twice the FMA for the same series name! =D

Wow! (and here I thought Elfen Lied was getting long...) And just when my interest was totally dying, here comes a reason to get up to speed (and they're still coming out? :O ) -- perfect! Thanks for the info!

Whoa...there's an Elfen Lied manga? o_O

They are still coming out (monthly), and we're gearing up for the final confrontation right now. All reports indicate that the series will be about 100 chapters long, so the manga will likely conclude near the end of next year, so there's no rush. Hope you enjoy the manga if/when you get around to it! =D

It goes on way further than the anime does and has a lot more bad end to it... it's something that should be taken in very small doses or else it makes you want to kill yourself, lol but I'm so addicted that I can't stop ^^' Plus the most recent chapters have made me actually hope that my favorites might survive.

Ah, perfect! More than 100 chapters (I'm looking at you, Naruto...) and I start losing focus and forgetting things.

Somebody skipped over chapter. 39. Remember how she broke down and suddenly lost the will to live when Lust "killed" Mustang.
She didn't even kill Lust.

She was angry, in shock, and in grief. I said she was bad-ass, not that she was an inhuman and cold-blooded.

And remember how Mustang confronted her about that in 40? Characters feel, falter, and grow. This is a good thing.

(And regarding killing Lust, it was more like she ran out of ammo. Consider it as Hawkeye depleting Lust of many of her lives before Mustang came in and mopped up.)

that's not really what i was fully meaning seeing as how i was indirectly saying in a clearly "LOL i just showed up out of nowhere" comment that uh, yeah. all right. she MIGHT have collapsed but i personally believe that although she might have had that ~* moment of weakness *~ it does not make her such a weak character or whatever.

la la etc. etc.

She was angry.
She was in shock.
She was in grief.
She had no real reason to be because she had no reason to believe that Lust was telling the truth.
We're presented, initially, with a Riza Hawkeye who is strong and intelligent. Some strange woman shows up and says she's killed Roy Mustang, but shows no proof of having done so... why in the world should Riza believe that she's not lying? And therefore immediately break down and think her life has no meaning?
And that's the point, is that yes she ran out of ammo. But again, she had no reason to believe Lust (and the fact that she did does not at all seem consistent with her character up until that point) and that whole spiel really was there just to reduce her to a vulnerable state so that Mustang could come in and be all badass and heroic
If that isn't a big blow to Hawkeye's character, I don't know what is.

She was carried away by her emotions. She doesn't want Roy to die, and her emotional reaction to "news" of his death was enough to blind her to all the possible reasons that he wouldn't be dead.

I don't see it as a "blow" to Hawkeye's character. What we see is that Roy is really damned important to her. You may call that "weakness". Whatever. It's character development, and it's not like it's simply brushed aside. It's addressed immediately in the next chapter. Hawkeye let the emotions get the best of her rationality, and now she knows better. GROWTH! \o/

Sorry, jumping in. I don't see that scene as growth to Riza's character at all. In fact, Riza has had hardly any development in the manga, as all we see is more of her character revealled. Like her past and what Roy means to her. She is still the same character, and while, yes, she let her emotions get the better of her, she still remains the same character despite what she learned. Growth is getting better as a character, and that character becomes different with that growth.
