123: maybe you're not hanging around the right bits of fandom - most of the fandoms i frequent have very interesting meta discussions in some communities, and very pornographic discussions in other communities. look around some more and you will find people who want to discuss ideas like the importance of story-telling with you, i assure you. some proof that there are intelligent people in fandom who are interested in things more important than which character is hottest is (some of) the discussions about the validity of fandom that were sparked after the great lj deletathon.

that being said, you're coming at this from the wrong angle. you should probably keep in mind that no, fandom isn't about discussing the ideas you said in your comment (correct me if i'm wrong - did i miss that memo?). for most people, fandom is a fun hobby that lets them relax, and, as someone above me said, you could say that any pastime or hobby is meaningless and distracting. fandom only provides the possibility for people to come together and discuss issues, not the guarantee. some people get too into it, true - that's a different issue though. and some people (like you apparently) try to get something more out of it. that's awesome, i feel the same way. but you shouldn't begrudge others just because all they want to do is spend a few hours relaxing reading fic or 'squeeing' over a hot guy in a tv show they like with their friends. it almost seems like you've just realised that the reasons you were justifying staying in fandom weren't working for you, and you're angry with yourself. i hope you're able to come around and enjoy the frivolous and serious aspects of fandom (and everything in life), and find the balance that suits you.

ps: you sound like my sister, lol. the only reason i don't think you're her is that your graphic skills are too good. also, my sister has a sense of humour about these things ;)
