It's easier to ship one half of a canon couple with someone else if you villify the other half.

Or so seems to be the thinking.

(No, I don't think Ron and Hermione are suited for each other long-term, but Death Eater Ron goes too far.)

Some of these people weren't even against Ron/Hermione per se. They basically just held that all the Weasleys were evil, but the Malfoys and other Slytherins, even Voldie, were good.

Honestly, I think they just wanted Harry Potter to be something that it isn't.

But yes, a lot of bitter H/Hr shippers also went for Ron the Death Eater.

I only ever heard about this waaaaaay after the books had finished but I still can't believe that anyone legit bought it as a solid theory.

It's just... it's completely illogical.

I hated that, and I shipped Harry/Hermione. Okay, I have some issues with Ron. And he isn't perfect or my favorite. But he's ultimately a great character and loyal friend. If you need to ruin one character to write a ship, you aren't a good writer and you don't really have faith in the strength of your ship.

It's not that unbelievable, though. Fair weather friend turns against more popular/rich/famous one because of jealousy is not a rare trope. And until and including GoF and OotP Ron certainly looked like a fair weather friend sometimes. Of course, he turned out different and a true friend to Harry, but many fanworks were written long before that.
