I had something similar happen! I wrote fic for a particular pairing in X-Men comics and they had a rival pairing (like you, I never said anything negative about the other pairing as it just wasn't interesting to me). A few years ago, their pairing became canon and they messaged me to let me know how excited they were. I replied because I was happy for them and then they said "I bet you feel dumb stanning for [other pairing] all that time!"

...no, not really! I don't ship based on what I expect to be canon, especially as most of my ships are f/f!

Just w-o-w. So canon cancels out fanon in that person's mind. They are up for disappointment in their life...
