What else could a movie need? To not have such awful CGI ghosts, for starter? I almost couldn't believe it was Del Toro in some of those scenes, he did better with The Devil's Bone almost a decade and a half prior.

Honestly, all the actual horror elements were poorly done and didn't seem necessary at all in retrospect, especially when they lent themselves to mis-marketing. The gothic romance would have shone with a more subtle approach when it came to the ghost, maybe just keep us guessing the entire time instead of frontloading us with bad CGI.

...when you say 'bad cgi', do you mean 'doug jones in a variety of weird rubber suits'? because i haven't seen the movie, but i have heard a lot about doug jones playing creepy ghosts in it.

DA but the ghosts were actors enhanced (some might say ruined) by CGI.

Personally I don't think the ghosts were really ruined by CGI...but the fact basically every ghost scene was in the trailer or in a TV spot gave off the wrong impression about the film and for sure potentially ruined any sense of suspense.

Javier Botet played more creepy ghosts in it.

What CGI? They basically filmed a couple of actors in rubber corpse suits and overlaid transparent footage of them into the scenes.

AYRT

When you watch the filming of the ghost scenes, the rubber suits the actors wore had those telltale green dots on them. They added effects like the standard blood clouds from Devil's Backbone, but also stuff like glistening blood, bulging eyeballs... and it's this latter stuff that I found totally unnecessary and distracting.

The Devil's Bone was fantastic! The slowly creeping, understated horror of it... A whole different genre though.

The Devil's BACKbone, not just The Devil's Bone, that's just gross.

And actually, it's not a different genre at all. del Toro does great commentaries on his movies (sadly none for The Shape of Water), and he talks very specifically about The Devil's Backbone being a Gothic Romance. He even references the same materials when talking about Crimson Peak.

Of course there's a whole checklist of what makes a Gothic Romance, but I think a line from Crimson Peak is one of the best descriptors, something like, "It's not a ghost story, it's a story with ghosts in it. The ghosts are metaphors for the past."
