(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)Honestly, all the actual horror elements were poorly done and didn't seem necessary at all in retrospect, especially when they lent themselves to mis-marketing. The gothic romance would have shone with a more subtle approach when it came to the ghost, maybe just keep us guessing the entire time instead of frontloading us with bad CGI.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-31 09:04 am (UTC)(link)When you watch the filming of the ghost scenes, the rubber suits the actors wore had those telltale green dots on them. They added effects like the standard blood clouds from Devil's Backbone, but also stuff like glistening blood, bulging eyeballs... and it's this latter stuff that I found totally unnecessary and distracting.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-31 04:23 am (UTC)(link)And actually, it's not a different genre at all. del Toro does great commentaries on his movies (sadly none for The Shape of Water), and he talks very specifically about The Devil's Backbone being a Gothic Romance. He even references the same materials when talking about Crimson Peak.
Of course there's a whole checklist of what makes a Gothic Romance, but I think a line from Crimson Peak is one of the best descriptors, something like, "It's not a ghost story, it's a story with ghosts in it. The ghosts are metaphors for the past."
