Not OP and certainly not a telephone expert, but I'm gonna go ahead and guess that a phone can pick up a certain level/amount/whatever of sound to transmit, and anything outside that range will be inaudible even if the listener has superhearing because the phone simply isn't sending it through.

Oh, so like they can't hear anything that the person who's holding the phone wouldn't hear. I didn't get what OP meant.
