(Anonymous) 2018-04-03 01:55 am (UTC)(link)First, the well has really been poisoned on the term by the fact that it's been used for like 15 or 20 years on the Internet by dudes who are defending their desire to fuck 14 year olds. And in general, people almost always seem to want to call something ephebophilia as a form of minimizing it and exculpating it, which makes me uncomfortable.
Second, it's often difficult to draw bright-line distinctions between what is ephebophilia and what's pedophilia, and it's also often difficult to determine how meaningful the distinction is in moral terms.
So I'm at least skeptical about the use of the word, even though from a strictly logical-conceptual point of view I understand the appeal.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)When the distinction is only ever brought up to say "well, it's not ~really~ pedophilia", I can't say I'm convinced.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-03 03:18 am (UTC)(link)I suppose I fall into the category of those who don't lust after children in real life but enjoy "pedophilic" fic where I project myself into the teenager on some level. Wish fulfillment I guess? I mean, if some of the loving relationship stuff I read/write is "abuse" and some of what I've experienced in real life is not, simply due to an age difference... I think that's kind of fucked up. But that's probably a whole different can of worms -- my main thing is that there is a difference between fiction and reality, between the worlds in fiction versus the world we live in, and I believe most people on the fic pages understand that. I hate that the satisfaction I get from fic would be considered sick by 99% of the population solely because there's a teenager involved with an adult, but that's not going to make me feel it's wrong or that I should give it up.
...and I guess this ended up being more of a response to another thread but whatevs
