...would you rather be the fan favorite, or the creator's pet?

Assuming that in being one you are barred from being the other, but not necessarily meaning that you would be hated by the other faction or anything. Just. Mutually exclusive options.

I'd rather be neither, but probably the fan favorite.

The creator's pet is usually cringey and obvious and awful in canon, whereas the fan favorite is the same but in fanon. I'd rather have the real one be normal because at least you could say it's not canon then.

Plus some creators live to put their favorites through the wringer. I don't need that amount of suffering and drama, thank you very much.

It depends how long the show goes. If only 1 season, definitely creator's pet. If it's longer than 2 seasons, definitely a fan favorite - fan favorites get blown out into bigger parts as time goes on whereas creator's pets get screwed with as people realize the fandom doesn't share the creator's feelings.

If it's exactly 2 seasons, that's a grey area. Probably fan favorite, though, fan favorites are just cooler.

So in a one-shot property like, say, a movie (no franchise), you would want to be the creator's pet?

Fan favorite, because even if I only have a few scenes, there will be masses of fanwork dedicated to my character. If I'm lucky, the creators will keep me around and not ruin me. I fear creator's pet may get a little Sue-ish.

Fan favorite. I know what happens to creator's pets. Either they're horribly obnoxious because the author loves them or they SUFFERRRRRRRRRRRRR because the author loves them.
