Barring other evidence, even if both were telling the story, there's no way to know if he's telling the truth. Even if two people are telling contradictory stories, it doesn't mean one is lying and the other is telling the truth. Though it's more likely than not, it could also be that they could both be lying or both telling the truth from their perspective.
