The thing that really makes me resent Reylo and all the women who just gleefully support it is that it essentially turns Rey from being a realized main character to a plot device used to ~change~ the actual important character, the poor woobie Kylo. It demotes her to love interest who no longer cares about self discovery, but about healing a douche. TLJ basically did this to her and it pisses me off. I never really warmed to Rey or any of the new characters, but this was a shit move.

Well, if that's what happened your universe's version of TLJ, I'm not surprised you feel that way. Seriously, and here I thought it was the Reylo fans who misinterpret canon.

I think you saw a different film to me.

I mean, as it stands, Rey thought she could turn Kylo through the Power of Love, and had to learn it wasn't as easy as all that, because Kylo remains a power-hungry dick. And she had the strength/ sense to say no and walk away when she realised she'd got him wrong. That's not the usual story and it's arguably an important one to tell.

As it stands, there is no mention of "love" where it comes to the Rey and Kylo relationship.

Platonic love/the love of friendship is a thing... As a non-shipper I thought it was pretty clear that for awhile Rey had convinced herself that if she showed him enough compassion and support he'd change his mind and support her cause instead.

Because if people talk about platonic love or friendship, they wouldn't just say "love" without any other comment, especially not when it's in context for a known/infamous ship.

Funny, I find myself interpreting Relo retroactively in light of A Wrinkle in Time, which is all about (both book and movie) the healing and redemptive power of unconditional divine love. And TLJ IMNSHO says, "Nope, the duchebag actually has to want to change for that to work." Kylo's tragedy isn't that he's lacking opportunities for reconciliation, it's that he rejects all of them in favor of his power fantasy of reshaping the universe so that he's never hurt again. It wouldn't surprise me if the question of how to "redeem" someone who doesn't want is raised explicitly in the next movie.

(My bet for the grand finish, Kylo does turn to the light side and is stabbed in the back by Hux, who's the zealot of the story. But that's not going to be a Beauty and the Beast romantic moment.)
