I definitely feel you. It's also frustrating as a reader when you're trying to find fics about a rarepair - it's basically impossible in some fandoms.

I feel you too. I have had this problem in quite a few fandoms. It is even worse when I can't stand C/D and it continues to show up in every A/B fic anyone writes.

Does C/D still get likes when it’s actually in character? Maybe the issue isn’t “I can’t get likes because I don’t write C/D,” but rather “I can’t get likes because in-character ships aren’t actually popular in this fandom.” In a way, I think the latter is actually less frustrating.

If I, as a hypothetical shipper of C/D, have A/B in my fic, what is the appropriate thing for me to do?

Perhaps, if A/B is in the background and isn't terribly significant to the story, don't use the tag? There are ways of telling readers that A/B is in the fic without straight up using the tag. That might make things a little easier and better.

If it's not a major sideship, I wouldn't put it in the relationship tags (assuming you use AO3). But in the additional tags, you could put "side A/B" so people know it's there.

Yeah, as the other two said. Don't put it into the relationship tag, put it into the other tags and note that it's only a side pairing. It makes searches so much easier!

One of my fandoms has two juggernaut pairings. And I ship my A/B and I'm glad it's popular, but I cannot stand my C/D and they're ALWAYS the backup pairing, not just in fic but like in any discussion, people treat it as a given that if you ship A/B you also ship C/D-- and even people who are sick of A/B as one of the juggernaut pairings will go on about how C/D is still good. And I just... like, looking at stuff for it is a strong squick to me. But it's so prevalent and there's such a 'well it's basically canon' attitude about it...

(and I ship C and D in separate rarepairs, one casually but the other is actually my main pairing, so it's just... so irritating to have it as a background pairing in every other fic)

I totally TOTALLY feel you, I'm sort of in the same situation. Except with me, it' more like A/B is only ever there there as part of an A/every other character fic and never just by itself.

This is one of the really frustrating things about AO3. People tend to spam the tags with pairings - I wish they wouldn't unless they are featured ships. Makes searching for anything ten times harder, especially with smaller pairings.

This, so much. As a rarepair shipper, this is my major pet peeve.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! Biggest pet peeve. There have been times where I've searched on a tag for my preferred pairing and have had to go through SEVERAL pages of results (all with roughly 800 tags, mostly ship-related) before I find one that actually seems to be ABOUT my OTP.

UGH.

I feel you, nonny. I have this same struggle in the MCU. People tag my rarepair when really they mean "Sam mentions that he dated Riley in the past while helping Steve/Bucky/whoever deal with their feelings." :,(

You know true suffering, OP.
