You're not wrong, the Ryan Murphy style is soap opera as all hell.

But... people really, really like soap operas. And he marries the soap opera stuff to a distinctive aesthetic that works for people. I don't see why it's surprising that he's been successful - no more surprising than Shonda Rimes.

I just hate that I can't have a discussion about horror movies/TV without people bringing up AHS. It's not the be all and end all!

Of course it's a soap opera! It focuses almost entirely around the lives and problems of female characters. And that's most of the appeal.

Soap operas can last forever though, that's how you end up with 9000+ episodes of Corrie.

"Horror soap opera" is a really good description for AHS though, surprised I've not seen that phrase before.

I agree. So so so much. I was excited for the first series and ended up disappointed with the 40% drama and 5% horror and 55% of nonsense over nonsense over shock over nonsense.

Eh, I like the atmosphere. Especially season 5. It hit ALL of my favorite tropes for that genre.
