Not going to be abusive, but holy shit um. You do realize warnings are there not only to keep people from hitting trauma buttons (which people DO HAVE- you're not a wimp if you've been raped and don't really want to read about rape, methinks), but also to just... let people know a story has things they aren't in the mood for or think are usually handled badly (rapefic in some fandoms seems to mean "lol seme overpowers uke and uke fights but seekritly likes it and they fall in loooove"- yeah, I can see skipping those). It also attracts readers who ARE looking for that particular thing!

Plus, sheesh, would you let a thirteen year old read X-rated stuff? Not saying the Internet needs to be policed, not by far- some people can handle shit, I read It at the age of like ten- but for kids who really don't feel like reading high-rated stuff, it's a good warning on something they just don't feel comfortable with. It doesn't have to be a straight divide of being perfectly okay with and wanting to read everything ever at any time and OMGTRAUMA!

But generally a fic's rating, its summary and its genre should give you a pretty good idea of whether or not there might be objectionable stuff in it. Something R-rated that's listed under "tragedy" is probably going to be pretty dark and might contain some disturbing things. On the other hand, a G-rated romance fic is probably going to be pretty safe.

I dunno... I mean, books don't come with warnings, so I don't quite understand why fanfics are somehow viewed as so very different. Heck, books generally don't even come with RATINGS or pairing lists either, so already you have more info to go on for a fic than you do for a book.

Personally, I give a rating and list pairings (so that people who are looking for that particular pairing can find it) and that's it. I trust that my readers can figure out for themselves via the summary whether or not the fic is something they would want to read.

See, but that I count as a warning- R rated tragedy is probably going to have dark and distrubing things, NC-17 rated smut is going to be... well, lol, smut. And might have kinks you don't really want. Etc and so on, but that's really all the warning most people need- I think a lot of people are taking the secret to read as "no warning at all", which would be crappy.

The thing with books, which I don't see people bring up a lot, is that 99% of the time, books are a very different animal than fanfiction- and I'm not just talking quality-wise, because I love the quality of good fics. Length-wise, a fic is very short compared to a book, at least most of the time- even multi-chaptered fics usually don't run close. And who writes a book and what section it's in can usually tell you whether there might be rape, molestation, hardcore sex, death, etc- and while it can be a very detailed scene, it's often (depending, again, on the author) just a very small portion of the book at large. I don't always have to be "in the mood" to read a tragic death in a book, because it's usually a small, if significant, part of the overall book. But I don't much like reading deathfic, except when I'm in the mood... and that's usually, because of the size of the fic, either what the longer fic is focusing on, or a huge chunk of a smaller fic. On the whole, while the plots of books are not intrinsicly better, they do tend to be more complex than the plots of fics, and for good reason.

All I really need is a comprehensive summary, a pairing if there is one so I can find what I'm looking for and avoid what I simply don't feel like reading that day (OVERLOAD OF JOSHUA/NEKU OR YAMAMOTO/GOKUDERA SOMETIMES XD), and rating/genre sort of thing. Most of the time I can tell by that whether it's something I feel like reading, or something I'm relatively sure will be IC ("Kurogane/Fai Kurogane can't control himself anymore whether Fai likes it or not R to be safe!" is probably not ever gonna make my reading list, even if I'm in the mood for molestation XD). But you're right: fanfiction should at least get what books do, and I really think that's all people want. But if I go to the fantasy section and accidentally pick up an unmarked Stephen King book, I'm going to be pretty damn jolted. And I love Stephen King books. :>
