You may call him an empty glass. I call him a simple man with simple desires who can rise to greatness if he ever needs to. Even his methods are very simple, and I like that about him. He is like the spirit of a drill in human form.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I just don't see it as a bad thing. Although I don't consider him a "hollow empty shell" at the end, in fact I think he's very full and satisfied from everything he's done and been through.

Wordiest word that ever worded.

154 OP

You're right. I don't consider him an "empty glass" just a lot more "down-to-earth" that most Super Robot heroes. That's basically what I loved about Gurren-Lagann, how despite using archetypes(like Kamina or Nia) and over-the-top action the characterization was very humane and believable.

This I really do agree with. If he weren't like that, I probably wouldn't love him so much. :)

But one thing in your secret does bother me. Kamina and Nia did indeed shape Simon, but they did not define him. He does have his own sense of self, and after episode 11, he is proud of who he is (Simon the Digger) and doesn't ever relinquish that pride (recall what he says after Nia disappears). And ultimately, that part of him is what both Kamina and Nia relied on so much. Both relationships were mutually dependent.

In other words, even if he'd never met Kamina or Nia, he would still be Simon the Digger. But meeting them gave him purpose and something to work for.
