I feel like, it's basically like this person going...

PERSON: Haaaai guys, remember that creepy thing that you guys probably wouldn't touch with a ten foot poll? YOU KNOW, THE INTERNETS? YEAH, that place where psychotic Joss fans have, for years (even after your respective show's were canceled), gathered to write dirty porn about you and your costars, theorized about your rl sexualities and sexual proclivities and posted HD paparazzi photographs of your nose pores?? WELL, LOOK WHAT I FOUND ON THERE! Don't worry, I already showed it to your cousin and mother!

THE HORROR. Why are fans so...I feel like they're always stumbling around like idiots and hip-checking the fourth wall down. And then LAUGHING about it.

Yes, and the worst part is that I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing now, because the more I think about it, the more I realize that none of us (except the secret posters, of course) were actually serious about this shit, or if they were exaggerating it, etc.

So like, I'm sort of bouncing back and forth from being embarrassed for the Almost-Stalker-Chick and annoyed at 'Alyson's Cousin' for her obliviousness.

Seriously...celebrities KNOW how batshit their fans are. Let them at least pretend to be blissfully ignorant about it, for the love of God.

Yes! And I think fan-types who spend a lot of time on the internet sort of forget that the rest of the world has no idea what happens in an lj-community, who the O RLY owl is, and what internet manipulations of celebrities are. They're just going to be all squinty and like "What??" How do you REALLY explain those things to people who don't even use the internet for more than email, news and sports stats?? And I think MOST people just use the internet that way (with the occasional excursion into pornography).

Like, dude. Laughingly showing my husband a LOLCAT was an exercise in futility. He was like "What the...what is going on with that cat and...what happened to his grammatical abilities??" I had to basically explain the history/meaning of LOLCAT before he could comprehend what LOLCAT was and what might make it funny and why someone would make them.

SIGH.

So really, it's not just that these people are going to go "Batshit fans!" they're going to probably go "I don't even have the conceptual space in my head to understand exactly what is happening here, but it makes me feel uncomfortable!"

No shit.

And I must confess I'm also a little selfish: I think fandoms make everyone look bad enough to the 'outside world' as it is, we're really great at it on our own, thanks! No need to help us look more bonkers.

And yeah. I was halfway through explaining to my sister why lolcats are funny, when I realized that since she didn't already think it was funny on its' own, it probably wouldn't be after I've explained, either.

YES, exactly! Could you imagine being one of those people in fandom who just...LETS it all hang out?? Like, a loved one would ask you "You look down today! What's wrong?" and you'd go "SIGH! We've been arguing about the morality of brotherfucking on the internet again!"

ACK.

It's okay to think of fandom as this subversive place where you get overly geeked out and invested, privately, in tv shows/comic books/whatever. And never tell anyone else about it!

Yes, I rambled on and on about why the LOLCAT was funny too. And man, if a joke takes like, citations, you just gotta suck it up and realize that it's possibly not as universally hilarious as you had assumed.

*laughs helplessly*

You just made my morning, and there's an hour and 10 minutes to go! Fandom, you are teh wonderful. Never change.

Hah!

Fandom geekiness is all swell on the internets because, well, it's a generally accepted and known place to act geeky and crazy. But when people start thinking "it's fandom norm, so it should be accepted offline, too! Opresshunnn!!" then that person needs their DSL confiscated.
