LOL.
No.

I'm thinking the secret poster really was just trolling.

Her logic is skewed.

Scenario 1 - She posts no warnings or author notes of any kind, people read the story and say "dude you could have warned us about the underage bondage kink!!!" The author would then complain that she's NOT YOUR NETNANNY!

Scenario 2 - She posts warnings, people read them are happy, because only people who aren't bothered by her warnings enjoy it, so eeveryone's happy.

Scenario 3 - She posts no warnings, notes, pairings, nothing. Nobody bothers to read most of her stories, wary of being slapped with anime tentacle rape. Author is horrified that nobody is reading and therefore not leaving glowing reviews of her fic.

I've generally seen this sort of attitude come about as a result of 3 and 1 combined. Like:

Author posts a story with no warnings. It contains rape/death/whatever. People complain there are no warnings.

So rather than simply apologise and swiftly add a warning, author throws a wanky hissy fit. Is too special for fic warnings, it will ruin the story, etc.

People then avoid that author in the future because every time they see the username, they remember, "Oh yeah, that person is a douchecake."

We had one like that in House fandom a while back. She flounced because no one was reviewing her stories, came back and then flamed out again because, basically, no one could stand her or her attitude.

I don't know about you, but I consider 'death' to be a spoiler, not a warning.

If someone labels their fic with it, I'd be highly inclined not to read it, despite the fact that I have nothing against death in fics.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of those hilarious-but-probably-untrue anecdotes (circa 1998) of people getting upset because someone told them that at the end of Titanic, the boat sinks.

Isn't it enough that the character dies, or does it really need to be a big shock?

(Also, "character death," doesn't generally reveal WHO dies or why.)

And no, personally, I don't really consider ANYTHING in the warnings/notes/summary to be "spoilers," in any true sense, unless they're actually spoiling part of the canon.

Fanfic where a character dies is just a fan's, "what if?" scenario. If I read a deathfic, that's WHY I'm reading it - I want to see that author's interpretation of that particular what-if.

But it can't be a spoiler to me if it's not canon. It's deathfic - the character hasn't ACTUALLY died in canon. There's nothing to spoil.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Fanfic creates its own canon, and it can make its own twists and turns. A spoiler is a spoiler, no matter where it comes from. And a death can be part of a fic without the fic being ABOUT the character's death.

(also, if a fic is labeled A/B deathfic, it's pretty obvious that either A or B is going to die.)

Personally speaking, death is the one thing I never label in my own fics, and I've gotten some good reactions out of it, so I figure I'm doing something right.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I wish everyone with an unpopular opinion wasn't immediately labeled a troll. Yeah, there's trolls, but too many people (especially on F!S) are willing to jump on the 'IT'S A TROLL' boat, IMHO. Surprise: different people have different opinions!

Geez, you'd think no one ever thought of writing little things called 'summaries', by your description. Sometimes being descriptive instead of labeling can be pretty appealing to prospective readers, y'know.

[identity profile] dissident.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Are you really that dense?
Do you even read the responses?
Nobody is calling her a troll because we disagree with her opinion. The secret is trollish because it makes no real sense for reasons i've described a few posts up, and it was very obviously meant to cause wank.

Summaries =/= warnings. Authors are unlikely to use "Bob and Karen find themselves lusting after the same poodle." as a summary aren't they?

[identity profile] shunraiken.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
... I would totally read that fic.
