They don't even have to be appliances, just sounds that shouldn't be there. Especially in another room.

i.e. alone in a house and you hear something fall in the other room. Why are things falling? They shouldn't be falling. Or footsteps, if you're the only one. Best is footsteps above you if you live on the top floor...there's no good reason why you should be heading footsteps coming through your ceilings when there are no apartments above you. I hated hearing that shit.
