I'd much MUCH rather see tighter slaughter industry controls or even a revamp of the current system than people going BAN SLAUGHTERRR!!1 I always wonder why no one seems to address the issue of what will happen to all the unwanted, previously slaughtered animals when they start those manifestos... it's a horrible thing to do to all those unwanted animals for all the right reasons. D:

I agree wholeheartedly. People who are OMGWTFBBQTHINKOFTHEPONIES have clearly never seen a horse starving to death because he's too old to keep weight on.

God, yes. And not everyone likes broken-down off-the-racetrack firecrackers as much as I do, and there never will be a place for all of them until the RACE industry is given a revamp. AAAAAAAGH WHY THE STUPIDITY.

Ah, racing.
"Hey, let's give the world a bunch of really jumpy thoroughbreds and quarter horses that don't like circling to the RIGHT!"
"What a marvelous idea! Let's have another julep."

Gotta love the old racers, though.

It's not that racing is an inherently evil sport... I mean, even I get caught up in the pageantry and tradition surrounding the big races, Triple Crown and all that. And you can't deny that a lot of horses love the job. But for god's sake, if a horse being trained for ANY sport comes out of that training broken down and unable to comprehend normal pleasure riding without extensive retraining, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. If they were required to go on an hour long trail ride for every breeze they did you bet we wouldn't get so much of this idiocy. Something needs to change there.

I think my horse WISHES she was an old racehorse, the way she's always taking off. XD

Don't you know? It's far better to starve to death in someone's backyard than being rendered braindead and then eaten!

I've read a lot of Temple Grandin's work - she's done some truly amazing things for making the meatpacking industry in general more humane. I bet the legitimate 'horses be flighty and you can't hit them with the captive bolt stunner properly D:' problem could be solved with a modified version of the restraints she invented for Kosher/Halal cattle slaughter.

About the only reservation I have is some things I've heard re:veterinary care in pet/working horses that can sometimes render the meat unsuitable for consumption.

I need to do more research on her, then; that sounds like a real possibility for improvement. Not that the US slaughters horses any more, which means that all the horses who were previously slaughtered here are going somewhere where... we can't control the slaughter conditions. Yes. Because that is so much more likely to be humane. DDDDX

I've heard rumblings of trying to ban export of horses if the exporter intends to slaughter them.

Canada has good slaughterhouse practices in general as far as I know, but the conditions in Mexico are heartbreaking. Plus there's the whole transportation thing, which is a thorny issue no matter what animal you're talking about.

Re: Grandin - her Wikipedia article links to her site and gives some good background.

Yeah, that was part of the original no-slaughter bill that got mericifully shot down, depending on how you want to look at it. One wonders where the "Endless Green Pasture And Infinite Money To Support Unwanted Horses" bill that should be accompanying this stuff has gotten to.

Absolutely. If they're going to get killed - which a lot of them are eventually, one way or another - it might as well be close to home where we can control it; it's not like you're going to see people in Texas sending them to Canada, even if that wouldn't be horrible on them in terms of transport. I'm not looking forward to having money, just because it'll be so much easier to justify doing the JUST ONE MORE HE NEEDS A HOME routine with horses instead of dogs, and end up as horsepoor as many of the adults I know in the horse world. So many need it.

Thank you so much! I'll look into that. I wish horse people were more informed about this stuff in general. So many supported the no slaughter bills.
