It's not surprising. Plenty of people (like me) who've grown up knowing and loving horses are pro-slaughter; it's just another business.

Re: 137

Agreed.

I mean, I'm not all WOO HORSIE DEATH, but...what can you do? They're a source of food for some, and there are just too damn MANY horses and nowhere to put them all because there are so many people who are all OMG I SHOULD TOTALLY BREED MY MARE SHE'S SO PRETTY. The people who go on about how horrible it is and how we just need to send them to rescues don't seem to get it.

Re: 137

[identity profile] spacepotato.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. And they don't realize how EXPENSIVE it is for people to A) keep them alive when they start getting sick all the time, or foundering, or dropping weight; or B) Dispose of them legally after they've been euthanized.
*shakes head* THE IGNORANCE. IT BURNS US.

Of course, people could not get a horse unless they can look after it for its lifespan. And say sod legality and bury them in the field.

Hippy.

Re: 137

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps. But I grew up with horses too, and my family has somehow managed to make sure they were all looked after until they were old and sick enough to be euthanized. One of them lived to 38.

Government restrictions on disposal of the bodies certainly make it harder for people, though.

Re: 137

[identity profile] glitterberrys.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but then what about horses who don't have homes to begin with? Like with dogs and cats, there are just too damn many and not enough homes/rescues for them all.

Re: 137

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. It basically sucks, and as one of you said, it's helped by all the people who decide to breed their animals because they're cute.

Re: 137

[identity profile] spacepotato.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be nice, but most people in the horse business (breeding barns, trainers, racing stables) can't afford it because the horse business is not a well-paying one for the people at the bottom of it. The problem isn't "I can't afford to keep a horse for it's lifespan but I'm buying it anyway," the problem is "I cannot continue to make a living with my horse business if I have these horses slowly dying of old age."

And good luck digging a 12 foot hole big enough to fit a horse in, in the middle of land you need to grow feed for the horses that need it.

Re: 137

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
We borrowed machinery from a local farmer to dig holes to bury them in the grazing field. But yes, not a horse business.

I suppose I suffer something of a lack of sympathy for people in the animal business because I think a lot of the problems are caused by the businesses in the first place (horses, dog breeders, or whomever). I dislike our whole attitude of treating so many things around us as disposable objects there for our use until they're no longer convenient.

However that's getting a bit OT. Horse slaughter isn't particularly any worse than other kinds of animal slaughter, so people who get up in arms about it also lack my sympathy unless they don't eat other animals either!

I had no idea there were legal limitations for horse burial.

I don't know what it's like in the US, but there are various regulations in the UK. They're meant to prevent meat from horses which have been treated with medication from getting into the human food chain, or something. I don't really see why people shouldn't be allowed to bury their own animals though, since clearly those animals aren't going to be entering anyone's food chain!

Re: 137

[identity profile] glitterberrys.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
God, you have no idea how hard it was for me to find a place to dispose of my horse's body. Well, I say "me," my father had to do it, I was such a wreck I couldn't get through a conversation with anyone without sobbing hysterically. We ended up finding someone who'd bury him, but damn, it was INSANE.

Actually, you probably have some idea since you're a horse person, but I doubt most people know.

Re: 137

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
OTOH, if you said the same thing about dogs and cats, a lot of people would get furious.

Not me, after considering things. And I'm a hell of a lot closer to felines than equines.
