Kind of dumb, but probably not worth the effort to get mad.

Weirdly, there's porn with Indiana Joan. There's also an Australian woman, Joan Howard, who got it as a nickname, so really, Spielberg's not the first. I think it was just a quick way to make the distinction, since Indiana could be gender-neutral.

Also, if they actually do anything with this, can it be Sarah Shahi?

In Joan Howard's case it was an insult, though!

YES to Sarah Shahi, omg.

But I don't think there needs to be a distinction. In fact, it would be better if there weren't. Indiana Jones running around in her safari gear punching the crap out of Nazis is my jam. Every so often her hat would fly off and her gorgeous hair would spill out and she would have to tie it back, cursing the whole time. Then it's back to punching Nazis.

ayrt

I mean distinction purely in a shorthand way of showing that the character would be female, rather than prefacing the name Indiana Jones with 'female'. Because at this point just saying 'Indiana Jones' makes you think of Harrison Ford and if you don't want to say 'a female Indiana Jones' every time, then 'Indiana Joan' is pretty to the point - you know what character they are referring to and you know what the difference is.

I think Spielberg was trying to be clever at the expense of being patronizing. Let's put it this way: when they were talking about casting Idris Elba as 007, there were no funny plays on words to express he'd be a possible black James Bond. They just referenced him as a possible black 007 or black James Bond.
