Or they're older books that were popular well before the internet and have since then dropped out of the public view, so even if there was once an actual fandom, it was gone before it could have become an online community. Which tends to be the case with the books that I really get into and want fandom for, although very occasionally I will unexpectedly find something.

all very good reasons a book doesn't have fanworks, yes.

I feel like there's a chance older or obscure books may attract RPers but not people interested in fic or art. It's weird.
