I used to ship them. They really are kids, though. The casting was pretty spot-on. I can't ship kids these days, so I don't ship them either. Can't ship them in the book, though, because they are still kids in the books even if we don't have pictures.

See, I couldn't buy her as Meg at all because she was too cute. Meg was supposed to be gawky and awkward and very much not attractive at all, and she was adorable and conventionally pretty. I just couldn't see her as the Meg I remembered from the books.

That was actually a big part of why I loved Calvin/Meg so much - that he was attracted to her because she was brave and smart and strong, even though she wasn't pretty at all. So to see her made so conventionally pretty... ugh. Way to crap all over what was so great about the books, movie.

Yeah, hard to ship prepubescent kids when you're an adult.

My maternal instinct just was very concerned that Calvin's dad was like beating and abusing him, and Calvin just walks off at the end, now with the newfound courage to like... talk to his dad about his feelings, or something.

Are you honestly telling me the kids in this pic haven't hit puberty?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-20 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
The characters are 13 years old, so.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-19 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't everyone ship it?

But if you started shipping it as a kid, you maybe weren't thinking of them as the kids they really are, you were the same age or younger.

Had a similar convo with someone in their 60s who was disconcerted that Chris Pine looked so young. If your first impression of the parent characters was when you read it as a child it can be hard to adjust to the reality of how young the parents really were in the story.

They look like your average twentysomethings to me.

Also, as someone who was a twentysomething during the height of HP fandom, I just do not fucking get y'all's hangups about shipping teenagers, especially with other teenagers.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-20 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
dude, they're like 12...

(Anonymous) 2018-04-20 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Buddy, you're even worse than me at guessing ages. They're 14 and 15 and it shows.

Agreed on the weird hangups, though.

SA

That being the actors' ages, I don't recall the characters'.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-20 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well damn.

Still rolling my eyes at the "prepubescent" comment above, as these two look nothing as young as the Stranger Things kids, for example.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-20 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, prepubescent is definitely not a word I'd use to describe them.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-20 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
the Stranger Things characters are like 12 in the show, too. though some of the actors are 15-16.

I'm a little concerned though that you mistake these obviously young kids for "20-somethings". hope you don't hit on many "20-somethings".

(Anonymous) 2018-04-20 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm don't hit on anyone because I'm married.

Also, most people under 35 are tediously immature to me.

Your concern is precious, though.
