I usually don't like this trope. But I loved Caitlin. It just made me hate Gibbs (and later Tony). I miss Caitlin.

Attend the tale of Caitlin Todd
She trod a path that many have trod
A marksman's bullet is sure to be true
Once contract negotiations fall through
Bellasario was a vengeful god
To Caitlin Todd
The first dead agent of Gibbs' team....

Yeah, the annoying way that female characters are often written in live-action TV shows turns me away from it. I understand where you're coming from, OP.

Kate was actually my favorite character, and I shipped her so hard with Abby. I somehow ended up writing the first femmeslash for the fandom, not that it matters now. I was so pissed off when she died that I never watched another episode of NCIS. It doesn't help that every time I mention that, someone always seems to chime in, "Ziva's way better than her, though!"

(Anonymous) 2018-04-21 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Caitlin, and I never liked Ziva, and I think seeing Ziva as a replacement for Cate is kinda stupid. They could have added Ziva to the team without killing off Cate, but when there are contract/producer problems that's the easy way out, I guess.

I believe the actress quit.

She whined about it being too much action yet went on to play a cop in Rizzoli and Isles. At least she was less annoying there for a time. I hated Todd and her snideness about everyone and was glad when Ziva replaced her.

I loved Caitlin so much and while Ziva grew on me I never forgave the show for doing Caitlin that way.

I didn't like the way she was introduced either.

I also didn't like the way Sam Carter was unnecessarily antagonistic - I get what they were going for, but it was off-putting. Same with Kate.

At the time, there wasn't a plan to kill her off, but the actress asked to be let out of her contract. I'm not sure it was for the reasons stated then. But it was shocking, like I think a death like that should be, so it worked in that way for me.

^I meant to put Sam Carter in Stargate SG-1.

Huh. I loved Caitlin. And hell, it was the pilot, of course it was rough. But it was well worth getting to know and love her, I think. Her death was very well done.

I loved Ziva, too, and was actually more furious about her exit.

Yes, the pilot was pretty rough. They hadn't yet found the character voices and everything. And it was so weird, because in the pilot Gibbs was the movie buff, not Tony, and then they switched that around. People seem to forget that pilots are often not the polished thing the show becomes later.

I don't like how the male characters are always right and the female characters are always wrong in these cases. I can't remember the specifics in the NCIS pilot, but it's usually that the woman wants to obey procedure and do the right thing and the guy is a maverick operating on 'gut instinct' and 100% of the time works in his favor, grr.

that said, I liked the tension between Kate and Gibbs and I totally shipped it as a result. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Anonymous) 2018-04-21 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
I thought in the case of the NCIS pilot that was okay, because they were working for different agencies. One of them has to be "in the wrong", and they did lure Caitlin away to join the "right" team afterwards.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-21 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently, the only way to write a female character off the show is to shoot her.
