You shouldn't take Philip Pullman any more seriously than any other fantasy. You want alternate views of the world / gods / whatever? Loads of other authors have done it as well.
Personally, I think Pullman was so obviously ANTI-RELIJIN U GUYS that he ended up being less convincing in his views. His story is obviously there to get across his beliefs about organized religion, and I think there's some shock value thrown in as well. He was just sort of obvious about the whole business.

Seriously. His is no more an accurate depiction of the world than Star Wars tells the true story of a galaxy a long time ago and far far away.

I'm also not sure how his presenting the Gnostic universe is supposed to make an Atheist point. Gnosticism pre-supposes a higher godhead.

I think he's trying to say that even if there is a God, you shouldn't believe in him, not really making an actual Atheist point.

I also think that one of the reasons so many people are convinced is because he writes a good story, and he wrote about things that are sort of like the worst nightmare of anybody religious. That doesn't mean it's not just fantasy, when you get right down to it.

Geez, people, stop treating his words like he's the Second Coming or something -_-
